About the Story
If you didn't play and don't know the story you better stop here if you don't want to read spoilers^^.
There are a lot of "conspiracy theories" about the storyline of this game (like in every good RPG game) and each person takes its own conclusion while playing or watching a walkthrough, this is my point of view:
The game revolves around Squall and his struggle to accept that he needs friends, love and help, that he can't live his life so closed inside his little world without trusting other people.
In this process he finds loyal friends and falls in love with Rinoa that is his opposite in almost everything. He needs her to be like that to pull him off his "comfort zone" and make him believe he can actually rely on his friends.
It's an emotional journey not only for Squall but for every single character. Each one have a moment to shine and share their own story and like a puzzle you start figuring out that there is something bigger than just "by chance" and at one of the end game scenes you see exactly why and how that happened.
The love story cycle that began with Laguna and Julia being taken apart from each other by "destiny" ends up making Squall and Rinoa's love story more in depth, like they are fulfilling their parents almost "started" and totally unresolved love story.
It's not said in any moment what happened to Julia, she just isn't there anymore and the ring Rinoa carries in her necklace makes me think that it was from Julia and that she passed away. I saw somewhere that Julia died when Rinoa was still a child but I didn't find anything about this subject "in game", but it makes all sense.
Laguna's story with Raine (that includes Ellone) ends more tragically and brings Squall's drama a deeper depth: it explains why he is so closed inside his security walls and why he doesn't want to feel any kind of bond with other people.
The end game scenes with Laguna always bring tears to my eyes... think about all he had to do and all he sacrificed for a "higher purpose"... oh, I'm better stop now... XD
Final Fantasy VIII
It all started with an ex-boyfriend. He used to play this game and from all the games he and my friends played (and I watched them playing tons of games for hours and hours) the only that made me sit down and play it myself was this one, and sadly my relationship ended BEFORE I was able to finish the game.
The first turn over happened while I was living in Japan: I loved to go to "Book Off" that is a kind of a pawn shop (not sure of the exact word to use here) and I found an old copy of the game and bought it.
BUT, to play I needed the PS... starting a new part of the saga T_T fail me forgot about that *sighs*
Why? Because at that time (back in 2005) my brother already worked at a Sony factory making PSP and PS3, so you can imagine that finding an old console (fully functional) wasn't really easy and every time I found it I didn't have the money to buy it T_T...
Of course there are some "alternatives" and I kept trying, starting a new chapter of failness lol
First I had to try some emulators (that didn't work at all) and then some ROMs (that didn't work as well). I tried it myself downloading and installing (and of course failing completely), so as my last resort I asked my brother to help me. Result? Fail again T_T... he could make the ROMs and Emulators work fine at his computer but couldn't make it work on my laptop so I totally gave up trying to play it again.
And the last turn over came recently when I found that Square released a Steam version that is downloadable and you can play on PC, so this is what I did to finally be able to play and almost finish the game...
Yes, almost... T_T
I managed to get all the way to Ultimecia (the final boss) at her castle but was defeated by her, then I thought about starting the game again and make things in a better way, so I watched some walkthroughs and started again... but left it beside to play FFXIV Online and then play PoE... I plan to go back and finally play it to the end ^^.
